Everything you always wanted to know about flamenco!
Flamenco is a rich and complex music revolving around several key elements: traditional structures, a common traditional repertoire, an elaborate language, and, last but not least, musical codes. We can spend years learning choreographies, steps, letras, or falsetas by heart and still miss the fundamentals of how it REALLY works.
“Comprehensive Flamenco Studies” offers an alternative yet complementary approach to learning flamenco.
It is a comprehensive approach to improve your practice through a sound understanding of the art of flamenco as a whole.
In addition to any regular flamenco classes (whether it be dance, singing, guitar, percussion, or palmas) this course will provide you with the tools that you need to perform better as an artist, but also to appreciate flamenco more fully as a spectator.
What do we do during the class?
- Listen, watch, and discuss audio and video excerpts of cante, baile, and toque, analyze, comment, compare, discuss, investigate, understand what we have experienced, and put each aspect in relation to the other within a holistic perspective.
- Learn the structure and mechanism of each musical element with clear analysis tools, from the largest elements — a complete baile, a series of letras, or a falseta — to the most smaller details — a specific step, a specific line of a letra, or a remate.
- Study various palos and styles, learning their characteristics, common points, differences, and specificities.
- Practice rhythm and palmas through practical exercises that build up skill.
- Develop your autonomy through efficient practice strategies.
- Review your own musical/choreographic material and suggest improvements.
- Understand and experiment with improvisation in the flamenco context.
- Share our experiences and knowledge.
- Answer any and all questions you may have.
Group schedule:
- You can integrate a group of people you do not know, the experience can be extremely rewarding! Contact me to find out the schedules of existing groups or to join the waiting list for a new group.
- “Comprehensive Flamenco Studies” group lessons open as soon as a minimum of 5 people is reached (max 10 people). The schedules will be established according to the availability of everybody in the group.
IMPORTANT:
Group classes, every week, same day, same time, throughout the year. If you cannot attend a class, we’ll certainly miss you, but don’t worry! A recording of the session will be sent to you!
