GOOD NEWS!

flamencoMAPS is opening new Live Online Weekly Group Classes for ALL (dancers, guitarists, singers, percussionists...)!

Rhythm, Compás & Palmas

Get Started!
Understand the compás, practice the compás…
BE the compás!

Are you tired of not understanding what you hear or what you’re doing?

Tired of not remembering what you learn?

Of not feeling comfortable with the compás?

Or always fear being “fuera de compás,” and if that happens, not knowing how to get back on track? (it happens to everyone, so don’t worry!)

All this is really not inevitable, you just have to know how to practice!

The 3 steps

From my own experience as a flamenco musician, and after years of teaching, I am more than ever persuaded of the need for any flamenco artist or student to approach compás and palmas in a REAL and DEEP way.

Everything is built on a solid compás, be it dance, cante, guitar, cajón, or palmas. For me, that means 3 steps:

· Understand · Practice · Feel ·

We all need to take these steps in order to move to the next level. They may seem obvious, but they are often skipped. Too often we learn and practice things that we don’t really understand, and too often things are taught to us in a superficial way.

We receive the “packaging,” but not really the content!

Moreover, we often learn things that are not yet at our level. Things that are too complicated to understand or too difficult to execute. If this happens it can confuse us, lead us astray and eventually ruin our motivation.

These “3 steps” do not mean that we spend one year understanding, then one year practicing, then finally feeling! No! Everything is connected. You have to understand in order to feel better, feel in order to practice better, practice in order to understand better, etc.

But all this methodically, little by little, starting with solid foundations.

Already on YouTube!

I recently created a video on the FlamencoMAPS YouTube Channel about what it means to play the palmas and how to practice the compás effectively.

How Will This Class Help You?

If you spend time right now starting from the base, from the first step, and then work your way up the ladder of mastery, in the end you will save a lot of time (and money!) and your mastery of the compás will be solid, deep and LASTING.

Whatever else you learn – whether it’s to dance, play, or sing – it will be understood, assimilated, interpreted and therefore be more expressive.

What is even more important: you will become INDEPENDENT!

Practice better on your own, understand what you are doing, master the material you already know (dance steps, escobillas, falsetas, llamadas, remates, patas, palmas patterns etc.) and give it a new expressive dimension! Learn how to acquire new material more easily and quickly!

That’s one of the wonderful things about flamenco: you don’t have to do complicated things to move people or have fun. But yes, it is essential that everyone adapt what they do to their level (of understanding, of technique) so that whatever we do, it is UNDER CONTROL, it is DEEP, I like to say “INHABITED.”

You dance? Put on your shoes!
You play guitar? Tune it!
You play cajón? Sit on it!
We will use them in class to directly apply what we are working on together!
The Essence

Watch people dancing at a fiesta por bulería! They don’t do much, but everything is a compás, everything is FELT, and everything contains the essence of compás, of flamenco.

And for all those like me who were not born into a flamenco family, this necessarily involves practicing and mastering the rhythm.

DURING THE CLASS

  • Understand the general concepts of rhythm, and of compás in flamenco, using new, ingenious tools (LEGOS, flamenco clock, counting on our fingers, etc)
  • Learn a coherent, elaborate and practical system to sing the rhythm, without doing musical theory
  • Create, practice and check personalized exercises together
  • Practice again with palmas, nudillos, and by singing the rhythm
  • Study and practice the different compases in all the palos.
  • Master the rhythmical codes — llamadas, remates, cierres in all the palos
  • Work on the sound quality of the palmas.
  • Build rhythmic accuracy: speed, contratiempos, redobles, dibujos
  • Practice more! ?
